Advance tickets for Star Wars: The Force Awakens are on sale – but some fans aren't happy
Advance tickets for JJ Abrams's heavily-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens went on sale at 8am this morning in the UK.
But cinema chains Odeon and Picturehouse are now having problems with their websites, due to what Picturehouse spokesman Gabriel Swartland has described as an "unprecedented" demand for tickets.
"We're working on it, we've had an unprecedented demand for tickets," he told the BBC earlier today. "We've had concurrent bookings in the thousands. On the plus side we already have sell outs. We expect it to calm down later in the day."
On Twitter, fans were less than impressed: the sheer amount of traffic and booking requests on the website made it impossible for everone who wanted tickets to be satisfied:
Other Twitter users wrote: "Trying to book Star Wars tickets ... Your website has gone into meltdown. D:"
"Are you having problems with the booking systems today, been trying to book star wars tickets for the last hour with no luck."
At least some enthusiasts still had the good humour to make wisecracks: "The Force is not with me this morning..." one user tweeted. "Failing miserably at booking tickets for @starwars at the @ODEONCinemas BFI IMAX."
The Star Wars website also revealed the official poster for the movie which shows "an awakening of the dark side... and the light".
The Force Awakens, the seventh film in the franchise, is one of the most anticipated films of the year, with flurries of excitement accompanying each trailer launch. The second teaser trailer, which debuted in April, has more than 64 million views on YouTube to date.
A third teaser trailer will be unveiled in the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens is released on December 17
